Purpose. This site will house
various information assembled by the Air Quality Laboratory at Washington
University (WUAQL) in support of the community of users of the Magee Scientific
Aethalometer. WUAQL has extensive experience
using the dual channel version of the aethalometer and also processing and
interpreting data from the instrument.
This site and its contents should not be construed as an official
endorsement of the instrument but rather is a collection of materials being
made available as a service to the broader community of current and potential
users, independent of the information provided by the manufacturer. The official source for information on the
Magee Scientific Aethalometer is http://www.mageesci.com.
Aethalometer Data Processing Software.
In collaboration with George Allen of NESCAUM, WUAQL has written a
software package – the Aethalometer Data
Masher – which processes raw 5-minute data into hourly-averages and
automatically performs a suite of data validation and formatting steps. The output can be easily converted into AQS
format using VOCDat (developed by Sonoma Technology,
Inc) as described in the user manual. The
current public release version of the software is Version 4.2g
: November 20, 2003 (the version number and date is displayed on the
software welcome page and also the executable file name). If you need the most-recent version, please
contact Jay Turner at jrturner@seas.wustl.edu
to obtain a copy of this freeware package and to be registered for automatic
notification of future updates.

User Tip – Getting the proper Visual
Basic Dynamic Link Library. The WUAQL Aethalometer Data
Masher is a 32-bit program written in Microsoft Visual Basic 4.0 and requires
the following dynamic link library (DLL): “VB40032.DLL”. If you encounter an error message upon trying
to start the program which states that this dynamic link library cannot be
found, you can download the DLL from any of numerous web sites such as FreewareWeb.com
(in this case, unzip the DLL file and it in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 subdirectory
if you have one, or alternatively in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory). [Jay Turner,
